Two IELTS practice sites, one decision. IELTSMate sells a large question bank organised by Cambridge IELTS book and test, with AI feedback and a choice of computer or paper mode. IELTSArena offers computer-based full mock tests with examiner marking for Speaking and one-time plans.
This IELTSMate vs IELTSArena comparison is for students who want to know which platform will actually move their band score. Price matters, but so do the practice format, the way Writing and Speaking are marked, and how long your preparation will run.
In one line: IELTSMate suits students who want a large bank of book-based practice, an AI Speaking test and a low yearly price in US dollars, while IELTSArena suits students who want free full Academic mocks to try first, examiner marking for Speaking and one-time plans matched to their test date.
Every fact about IELTSMate on this page comes from its own website, checked on 29 September 2026. IELTSMate's English pages show different prices in different places, so we give what each page shows and mark it [VERIFY]. Anything else we could not confirm is also marked [VERIFY] rather than guessed.
IELTSMate vs IELTSArena: what you are really choosing between
At first glance the two platforms look alike. Both cover Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, both cover Academic and General Training, and both use AI somewhere in the marking. The real differences sit underneath.
Question bank or mock test. IELTSMate lists its practice by Cambridge IELTS book and test, with section practice for each skill and a separate full-length mock area. IELTSArena is built around full timed mocks on a computer-based screen. One is a library you dip into; the other is a rehearsal of test day.
Paper or computer. IELTSMate lets you choose between computer-based and paper-based practice. IELTSArena practice is computer-based only. Since all IELTS tests are now on computer, this choice matters more than it used to.
Who marks your Speaking. IELTSMate's Premium plan includes an AI IELTS Speaking Test. On IELTSArena, examiners mark Speaking, supported by AI. You are choosing between speed and a human judgement.
How you pay. IELTSMate prices its English plans in US dollars, by the month or the year. IELTSArena sells one-time plans from 4 to 180 days with no auto-renewal.
Why comparing IELTS practice sites usually goes wrong
Students often choose a practice site in five minutes and regret it for five weeks. These are the most common mistakes.
Treating a question bank as a mock test. Doing Reading Passage 2 from one book and Listening Part 3 from another builds skills, but it does not train your stamina for a full timed paper. You need both kinds of practice, and it helps to know which one you are buying.
Reading "AI feedback" as one thing. AI feedback can mean a band estimate, criterion comments, a rewritten essay or a Speaking score. Check which one you get on the skill you are weakest in.
Ignoring the price on the page you pay from. When a site shows more than one price for similar plans, the amount at checkout is the one that counts. Always confirm it before you pay.
Skipping the free test. Both IELTSMate and IELTSArena have a free option. One free attempt tells you more about the screen, the timer and the feedback than any review.
An example: choosing between IELTSMate and IELTSArena
This is an illustrative example of a typical decision, not a real user of either platform. [VERIFY: replace with a real student story, with permission, if available]
Rashed lives in Dhaka, Bangladesh, and needs Band 6.5 overall with no skill below 6.0 for a Canadian college programme. His last test gave him 6.0 overall: Listening 6.5, Reading 6.5, Writing 5.5 and Speaking 6.0. His next test is twelve weeks away.
He likes IELTSMate's layout by Cambridge book, because he already owns two of the books and wants the tests on screen. He also likes the AI Speaking test for daily practice. But his real problem is Writing, and he wants to sit full timed mocks every week to build stamina.
"I kept doing single sections and felt fine," Rashed says in this example. "Then I sat a full mock and my Writing fell apart in the last forty minutes. I needed full tests and someone to tell me why Task 2 stayed at 5.5."
A student with the same bands but only three weeks left, or one who mainly needs more Reading and Listening volume, could sensibly choose the other way.
What the data says about how IELTS is marked
The official IELTS scoring rules explain why the format of your practice and the quality of your feedback matter.
From mid-2026, IELTS is no longer offered on paper, and every IELTS test is taken on computer (IELTS, March 2026). Paper-mode practice can still build skills, but your final rehearsals should be on a computer-based screen.
Writing is marked on four criteria of equal weight, so each one counts for 25% of your score on a task, and Task 2 carries more weight than Task 1 (IELTS, scoring in detail). Feedback that only gives one band cannot show you which quarter of your mark is weakest.
Speaking is also marked on four criteria of equal weight (IELTS, scoring in detail). Weak Pronunciation costs you exactly as much as weak Lexical Resource.
Your overall band is the average of your four skill bands. An average ending in .25 is rounded up to the next half band, and one ending in .75 is rounded up to the next whole band (IELTS, scoring in detail). That is why raising a single weak skill by half a band is often the quickest way to your target.

How IELTSArena fits into your IELTS preparation
IELTSArena is built for one job: getting you ready for the computer-delivered IELTS exam through full, timed practice with clear marking.
The test screen follows the computer-delivered layout, with a highlighter, notes, a question navigator, and contrast and text size settings, so nothing on test day feels new.
Writing is scored automatically, and paid students can ask for a recheck if a band looks wrong. Speaking is marked by examiners, who see AI suggestions but decide the band themselves.
Many students use a question bank for skill-by-skill practice and a full mock platform for weekly rehearsals. If that is your plan, you can start your free practice on IELTSArena and keep your other resources alongside it.
Self-diagnosis: what does your preparation need most?
Ask yourself these five questions before you choose.
- When did you last sit all four skills in one timed session on a computer? If it was more than two weeks ago, full mocks should come first.
- Which Writing criterion is lowest in your last Task 2 essay? If you do not know, you need criterion-level feedback more than more questions.
- Do you want Speaking feedback instantly, or from a human examiner? Instant AI suits daily practice; a human judgement suits a final check.
- How many weeks are left before your test? Your answer decides whether a monthly, yearly or fixed-day plan makes sense.
- Are you practising Academic or General Training? Check how many full mocks each platform has for your module before you pay.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is IELTSMate good for IELTS practice?
IELTSMate offers IELTS practice for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, organised by Cambridge IELTS book and test, for both Academic and General Training. You can choose a computer-based or paper-based mode, and the site lists instant scoring with answer explanations, AI feedback on Writing and an AI Speaking test on its Premium plan. There is a Free Plan with a full mock test, so you can try it before paying. Its English pages show different prices in different places, so confirm the plan and the amount at checkout before you buy anything.
How much does IELTSMate cost compared with IELTSArena?
IELTSMate's English homepage shows a Free Plan, a Premium plan at US$14.9 a month and a Pro Plan at US$69.9 for one year. Another IELTSMate page shows a VIP Quarterly Plan at US$6.6 a month for three months. Because these differ, check the price at checkout. IELTSArena sells one-time plans with no auto-renewal: ₹99 for 4 days, ₹699 for 30 days, ₹1,299 for 60 days, ₹1,599 for 90 days and ₹2,999 for 180 days. For a long preparation, compare the total cost for your whole study period, not just the monthly figure.
Does IELTSArena have an AI Speaking test like IELTSMate?
No, IELTSArena does not give an instant AI Speaking score. Speaking answers on IELTSArena are marked by examiners, who use AI suggestions as support but make the final judgement. IELTSMate lists an AI IELTS Speaking Test on its Premium plan, which suits students who want quick feedback after every attempt. The two approaches serve different needs. Speaking is marked on four equally weighted criteria, so whichever you choose, look for feedback on Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation separately, not just a single band.
Is paper-based IELTS practice still useful in 2026?
Paper practice can still help you learn question types, build vocabulary and improve reading speed. However, from mid-2026 every IELTS test is taken on computer, so your full timed rehearsals should be on a computer-based screen. Typing an essay, highlighting a passage and moving between questions with a navigator all feel different from pen and paper, and small delays add up across a timed test. A sensible plan is to use any mode for skill building, then switch to computer-based full mocks for at least the last four to six weeks before your test.
How can I raise my overall IELTS band by half a band?
Your overall band is the average of your four skill bands, and averages ending in .25 or .75 are rounded up. For example, bands of 6.5, 6.5, 6.0 and 6.0 average 6.25, which rounds up to 6.5 overall. That means lifting just one weak skill by half a band can raise your overall result. Find your weakest skill with a full timed mock, then focus on the lowest criterion inside it. In Writing, each criterion is worth 25% of a task score, so improving one criterion can be enough to move the band.
