Two IELTS platforms, both built around the computer-delivered exam, both scoring your Writing with AI, and both offering a free full mock test. Alfa IELTS keeps its plan prices behind a sign-up. IELTSArena lists every plan on its pricing page. That is only the first of several real differences.
Since mid-2026, every IELTS test is taken on computer, so where you practise matters more than it used to. This Alfa IELTS vs IELTSArena comparison focuses on what shapes your band score: who marks your Writing and Speaking, what you can try free, and how each platform fits the weeks you have left.
In one line: Alfa IELTS suits students who want a phone app, unlimited AI scoring on all four skills and the option to buy certified trainer evaluation, while IELTSArena suits students who want to see prices up front, sit several free full Academic mocks and have their Speaking marked by examiners.
Every fact about Alfa IELTS on this page comes from its own website, pricing page and app store listings, checked on 29 September 2026. Where something was not published or we could not confirm it, it is marked [VERIFY] instead of guessed.
Alfa IELTS vs IELTSArena: what you are really choosing between
A long list of mock tests looks reassuring, but it is rarely what decides your result. Four things matter more.
The first is how close the practice screen is to the real exam. On test day you will highlight text, write notes, jump between questions and manage a timer. Practising on a screen that works the same way removes one source of stress.
The second is who marks your Writing, and how. IELTS Writing is judged on Task Achievement or Task Response, Coherence and Cohesion, Lexical Resource, and Grammatical Range and Accuracy. An AI score, a peer score and a trainer's comments each tell you something different.
The third is who marks your Speaking. Speaking is judged on Fluency and Coherence, Lexical Resource, Grammatical Range and Accuracy, and Pronunciation. Some students need a quick estimate every day; others need a person to hear where their answers break down.
The fourth is what you pay and for how long. A plan you can price before you register is easier to fit into a budget, and the right length depends on your test date.
Why comparing IELTS practice apps usually goes wrong
Students often choose a platform in a way that does not match their real problem.
They pick the biggest number. A bank of thousands of questions sounds impressive, but if your Writing band is stuck at 6.0, a detailed breakdown of one essay can help more than a hundred extra Reading passages.
They treat all feedback as the same. An instant AI band, a score from another student and a report from a trained marker are three different things. Knowing which one you are getting helps you trust the result for the right reasons.
They skip the free test. Both Alfa IELTS and IELTSArena let you sit a free full mock. One timed attempt on each screen shows you more than any feature list, including this one.
They forget the calendar. A student with three weeks to go and a student with four months to go need different plans, even if their target band is the same.
An example: choosing between Alfa IELTS and IELTSArena
This is an illustrative example of a typical decision, not a real user of either platform. [VERIFY: replace with a real student story, with permission, if available]
Sujan lives in Pokhara, Nepal, and is applying to a nursing programme in Australia that asks for Band 7.0 in every skill. His last Academic test gave him Listening 7.5, Reading 7.0, Writing 6.5 and Speaking 6.5. His next test date is twelve weeks away.
He tries the free full mock on both platforms. Alfa IELTS appeals to him because he can practise on its phone app during his commute and get AI scores straight away. IELTSArena appeals to him because he can see every plan price before signing up and sit more than one free full Academic mock before paying.
"Two skills were half a band short, and both were the ones a person marks on test day," Sujan says in this example. "I wanted someone trained to listen to my Speaking and tell me what was holding it back. Knowing the price before I registered helped too."
Another student in his position, who mostly practises on a phone or wants unlimited AI scoring to check many short answers a day, could reasonably choose the other way.
What the data says about how IELTS is marked
The official IELTS scoring rules explain why the type of feedback you get matters so much.
From mid-2026, IELTS is no longer offered on paper, and every IELTS test is now taken on computer (IELTS, March 2026). A computer-based practice screen is no longer a nice extra; it is how the real exam looks.
In Writing, each of the four criteria counts for 25% of your score for a task, and Task 2 counts for more than Task 1 in your Writing band (IELTS, scoring in detail). Feedback that names your weakest criterion shows you which quarter of the mark to work on.
In Speaking, the four criteria are also weighted equally (IELTS, scoring in detail). Weak Pronunciation costs you exactly as much as weak Lexical Resource, so it is worth knowing which one is lower.
Your overall band is the average of your four skill bands. If the average ends in .25, it is rounded up to the next half band, and if it ends in .75, it is rounded up to the next whole band (IELTS, scoring in detail). This is why lifting a single skill by half a band can move your overall result.

How IELTSArena fits into your IELTS preparation
IELTSArena is built for one exam and one question: why is your band not moving yet?
The test screen follows the computer-delivered IELTS layout, with a highlighter, notes, a question navigator, and contrast and text size options. By test day the screen should feel familiar.
Writing answers are scored automatically when you submit, and if a band looks wrong, paid students can request a recheck. Speaking answers go to examiners, who use AI suggestions as support but decide the band themselves.
Plans run from a 4-day trial to 180 days, all one-time payments, so you can match the plan to your test date. You can start your free practice without paying anything.
Self-diagnosis: what does your preparation need most?
Answer these before you choose a platform.
- Do you know which Writing criterion is your lowest? If not, criterion-level feedback matters more to you than more tests.
- Do you want a person to mark your Speaking, or an instant estimate? Your answer points to a different kind of platform.
- Will you practise mainly on a phone or on a laptop? The real exam is on a computer, but daily practice can happen anywhere.
- How many weeks are left before your test? Short windows and long windows suit different plan lengths.
- Have you sat a full timed mock on a computer in the last two weeks? If not, do that first and let the result guide you.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is Alfa IELTS good for IELTS preparation?
Alfa IELTS offers computer-based IELTS practice with full and sectional mock tests for both Academic and General Training, plus a custom mock builder. Its Premium plan includes unlimited AI scoring for Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, and Premium Plus adds evaluation by certified IELTS trainers, returned in 24 to 48 hours. It also has iOS and Android apps with AI avatar Speaking practice. Plan prices are not shown on its public pricing page, so you need to register to see them. Take its free full mock first to judge whether the interface and feedback suit you before choosing a plan.
How much does Alfa IELTS cost compared with IELTSArena?
Alfa IELTS has three tiers, Free, Premium and Premium Plus, but did not show prices on its public pricing page when we checked on 29 September 2026. Its prices appear after you register, and its page data lists USD as the currency. IELTSArena publishes all its plans: ₹99 for a 4-day trial, ₹699 for 30 days, ₹1,299 for 60 days, ₹1,599 for 90 days and ₹2,999 for 180 days. All IELTSArena plans are one-time payments with no auto-renewal. Before you buy, sign in to Alfa IELTS to see its current prices and check whether its plans renew automatically.
Which gives human marking for IELTS Writing and Speaking, Alfa IELTS or IELTSArena?
Both offer a form of human marking, but in different ways. On Alfa IELTS, human evaluation by certified IELTS trainers is part of Premium Plus and is sold as trainer evaluation credits, with results in 24 to 48 hours. It also offers Community Scoring, where other users grade your answers. On IELTSArena, Speaking is marked by examiners who are supported by AI suggestions, and Writing is scored automatically, with paid students able to request up to five Writing rechecks a month. If your Speaking is stuck at Band 6.5 and you need 7.0, human feedback on Pronunciation and Fluency is often worth having.
Can I take a free IELTS mock test on Alfa IELTS and IELTSArena?
Yes. Alfa IELTS gives free users one full mock test covering all four skills, lasting about 2 hours 45 minutes, plus one sectional mock, limited practice questions and limited AI scoring, with no credit card needed. IELTSArena lets you sit free full Cambridge-style Academic mock tests. Taking a free mock on each is the fairest comparison you can make, because you see the timer, highlighting and question navigation under real conditions. Use your result to find your weakest skill, since each Writing criterion counts for 25% of a task score and one weak area can hold your band down.
Which is better for IELTS coaching institutes, Alfa IELTS or IELTSArena?
It depends on what your institute needs. Alfa IELTS offers white-label institute software with your own logo, URL and colours, unlimited student accounts, trainer review and adjustment of AI scores, handwritten essay upload, and one panel covering both IELTS and PTE. IELTSArena offers Teacher Mode, which any teacher can use to link students with a Teacher ID, plus an institute portal with batches and assignments. Neither publishes institute pricing, so request a demo from both, test each with a small group of students, and compare the cost per student before committing.
